Fox Valley Director Sits  Down with Doron News

Binghamton, NY

Doron News recently had the opportunity to speak with Rob Behnke, Director of the Truck Driver Training Program at Fox Valley Technical College. Rob is also President of the National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools. Doron is most appreciative that he took the time to answer a few questions.

What motivated Fox Valley to procure a Doron system?

We have always had plenty of trucks, as our customers’ needs/wants have changed we recognized we can provide most of them but not a simulation opportunity for them. This is one more way to deliver great education and training when needed. Also we recognize that it is an opportunity for our staff to grow in their learning and delivery styles.

What are your long term goals for your truck driving program while utilizing a Doron simulator?

Long range we anticipate reduction in truck expense, reduction in the theory-to-application process for our students, and bring opportunities to provide our course to more customers each year.

How has your experience with Doron been so far?

From inception to delivery we have had great support and been able to build a tremendous relationship with the technicians, the trainer, and with the sales team.

Any additional comments?

Simulation has been in our industry for many years, I believe a misperception of it may be is that it is either an expensive coat rack or video game, however we are finding, just like most other aspects of education, if used properly and appropriately, simulation can be an extensive and a very intricate part of the learning and remedial process.

According to Representative Pascrell, “Ensuring the safety of Paterson residents against the dangers of fire starts with providing the community’s firefighters with the equipment they need. That’s what the FIRE grants are all about,” stated Pascrell. He introduced the Pascrell’s Firefighter Investment Response Enhancement (FIRE) Act in March 1999. “This state-of-the-art equipment will ensure that our brave first responders have every advantage available to keep the risk of loss of life and property damage at an absolute minimum.  The FIRE Act was written here in Northern New Jersey with the purpose of helping communities support their first responders and bolster public safety.”, said the Congressman.

Olathe Fire Department Uses Doron Driving Simulator to Make Drivers Safer

Binghamton, NY

According to KCTV5 News out of Kansas City (February 7, 2013), The Olathe Fire Department is utizing a Doron Model 550Fireplus driving simulation system so, “…they can make fire truck drivers the safest they can be. That’s why they got the simulator that allows participants to drive over 100 miles, without using any fossil fuels.” Officials at Doron Precision Sytems, Inc. of Binghamton, NY maintain that their driving simulation systems are highly effective at minimizing energy consumption and reducing overall training costs.

Ed Reschke, Chief of Training for The Olathe Fire Department stated, “What we have is a driving simulator, we can put individuals up in a virtual world so if there’s mistakes to be had we can do it on the machine and learn from the mistakes…It’s not a game, it’s not a game, it’s a tool – a tool we can use to improve on our driving skills, we can set up scenes if we’re having issues with certain traits, whether it be backing or turning,” said Reschke.

Additionally, Fire Fighter Jason Seipel mentioned that the simulator is, “… set up just like our fire trucks – all the controls are the same. Basically, you have your air brakes and your lights and everything else.”

The Doron Model 550Fireplus Driving Simulation System was purchased with a FEMA grant and is equipped with a Law Enforcement modular driving position to accomodate police training. EMS driver training can also be accomplished, as the system includes ambulance specific training software designed by Doron.

Doron Simulator Trains 2,000 School Bus Drivers and Saves Two Children

Binghamton, NY, March 2012

According to a February 2012 article published in School Transportation News, a school bus simulator purchased by Education Service Center (ESC) Region VI in east Texas two years ago has trained nearly 2,000 bus drivers and saved at least two students’ lives. “The day after we got out of training, a car ran into the back of the bus going 50 miles per hour. The day before, that scenario was in the simulator. When you stop, you reset your air brake,” said Benney Raley, ESC VI component director of safety education training. “That one simulation they went through with loading and unloading probably saved two lives.”

Region VI used both local funds and grant monies to purchase the $200,000 state-of-the-art school bus driving simulation system manufactured by Doron Precision Systems, Inc of Binghamton, NY. The Model 460SchoolBus simulator replicates the driving compartment of a typical bus and includes components found in a late-model school bus. “It’s a bus cab, driver’s seat and steering wheel. When you start the engine, the seat vibrates just like it would with diesel, and there are high-definition monitors in front of you. It’s very realistic looking and feeling,” Raley explained. “We take it out to districts and do simulation training, and it’s been a big hit.” You can read the complete article about Region VI’s Doron School Bus Simulator here

Albany, GA Fire Department Takes Delivery on Doron Systems
for Complete Municipal Driver Training Program.

Binghamton, NY, May 2011

Doron Precision Systems of Binghamton, NY recently installed a two place driver training simulation system for the Albany Fire Department of Albany, GA. Albany FD took delivery of a 460Fire and 550LE simulator system with fire, EMS and law enforcement driving scenarios earlier this year. The Fire Department also procured a modular bus position for transit driver training applications. This installation puts the City of Albany in a unique position to exercise a variety of training options for municipal drivers.

As reported by FOX News 31 online of southwest Georgia, “The first time we put a driver in a seat now is on an emergency call, first time they’re ever driving in traffic with little or no experience there: That’s the way traditionally firefighters are trained,” said Albany Fire Department Chief Ron Rowe. “What this is going to be able to do is put them in situations where their cognitive skills will be elevated and improved, and once they get on the street they have more practice at what they’ve been doing, and it makes it safer for us as well as the public.” Read the complete FOX News report here.

SUNY Ulster Criminal Justice Program Thrives with Doron Driving Simulator.

Binghamton, NY, June 2010

Ulster Community College in Stone Ridge, NY has been utilizing Doron’s recently installed 550LE Driving Simulation System with great success. The 550LE System is equipped with the SkillTrak™ reaction testing software option and a law enforcement specific Defensive Driving Scenario Package.
