Doron Develops A New Interactive Training Program for NYSDOT and NYS Transit Properties Using Driving Simulation Systems; Pilot Program Brings Operators to Binghamton Headquarters — January 13, 14, 15, 16
Binghamton, NY, January 2004

Doron Precision Systems, Inc. announces the launch of Discover Safe Driving™, a new interactive, comprehensive program for hands-on training in driving simulation

NYSDOT is sponsoring four days of training to be attended by a new class of eight transit operators each of the four days; for six hours a day. The participating bus operators are being selected from transit agencies across New York State. Scott Searles, Director of Market Development says, “This is an evaluation of a pilot program which is designed to have a significant impact on the quality and effectiveness of transit operator training. Discover Safe Driving is modular and flexible enough to meet the nationwide transit agencies needs; allowing them to recognize the cost savings and increased safety achieved by the larger transit agencies currently using driving simulation based training.”

Transit operators are training on state-of-the art interactive simulators that create opportunities to further develop more complex cognitive and perceptual skills, while increasing the ability to comprehend and appreciate vehicle physics. Operators are able to experience, recognize, and deal with potential hazards before they become real-life threats. Inherent dangers involved with practicing the occurrence of these events during the course of a normal drive are eliminated due to the safe controlled environment of simulation.

The “virtual world or universe” the operators are driving in consists of urban, suburban, rural, and interstate, which allows the driver to encounter numerous decision-making situations. Instructor initiated events demonstrate the effects of various adverse roadway and weather conditions, including rain, snow, & ice and their effect on the operators ability to stop the vehicle.

* “Driver error” is a contributing factor in nearly all vehicle collisions. The cost of motor vehicle crashes that occurred in 2000 totaled $230.6 billion dollars. This is equal to approximately $820 for every person living in the United States and 2.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product. Doron has over 100 interactive simulator systems in the Law Enforcement market and over a dozen in the transit market. Doron customers see significant financial savings with New Jersey Transit reporting an annual savings of approximately $375,000 and a reduction in accidents from 42.6 accidents per million miles in 1994 to 34.1 accidents per million miles by 1998. * www.nhtsa.dot.gov
